Function and Aesthetics

The David Miller shop doesn’t turn out the plain-Jane round unadorned barrel on any of their rifles. The barrel treatment on each of the two Miller Co. models is totally different however. The Marksmen, intended to be a serious long-range-capable hunting rifle, has a medium heavy barrel. To remove some of the weight and provide some additional cooling surface area, all Marksmen barrels are fluted. After chambering, threading and fitting to an action, the Marksmen barrel is placed in a fixture and attached to a milling machine. A special cutter is inserted in the mill and the flutes are cut into the barrel. Each barrel has eight flutes machined into it. On average, it takes Miller a full day to do the machining to flute one barrel. He starts the job with a newly sharpened cutter and after fluting one barrel, the cutter is sent out for re-sharpening.
